Adelaide Airport Girls and Women’s Cup Final Results
Adelaide University has taken out the 2012 Adelaide Airport Women’s Cup after an impressive 2-0 victory over MUWFC Magic at Hindmarsh Stadium on Sunday.
A goal in each half helped Adelaide University claim its first piece of silverware since promotion into the Adelaide Airport Premier League this season.
Racheal Quigley found the back of the net in the opening quarter hour before Laura Johns capped off the win with a goal right at the death.
Adelaide University winger Katerina Bexis was award Adelaide Airport Cup Player of the Day.
Co-captain Ruth Wallace was delighted with the victory and said it was just reward for a fantastic season.
“It’s an awesome feeling and the atmosphere with the girls after the game was amazing,” she said.
“The girls have really worked hard all year and all that finally paid off. We played with real intensity and our communication on the pitch was outstanding.”
“We only scored two of our chances but we should have put away a few more. The work in the final third was great.”
MUWFC Magic coach Enzo Salzano congratulated the opposition and admitted they were deserved winners.
“We’re obviously all very disappointed but I think it was a just result in the end,” he said.
“They had more chances and clear cut opportunities and we struggled for the first 25 minutes. We made some tactical adjustments and got back into the game. When we went forward looking to equalize, they looked dangerous on the counter.”
“We had to fight hard to get to the final and it was a shame we couldn’t go all the way. But, we came up against a well organized and well drilled side. Congratulations to Uni.”
Adelaide University opened the better of the two sides and Quigley tested Magic keeper Kristi Harvey inside the opening few minutes but was denied by an impressive save.
Harvey could do little on the quarter hour with Ruth Wallace tore through the Magic penalty area and picked out Quigley at the back post with a net cut back and the striker made no mistake from 5m tucking the ball into the back of the net.
MUWFC fought back early in the second half and looked on track for an equalizer but were unable to make the most of their chances.
Bexis continued to torment the Magic defense, as did Quigley but they were repeatedly denied by Harvey who was a prominent figure between the posts.
On the stroke of full time, Adelaide University stole a second and effectively killed off the contest and sealed the win.
Bexis was again involved out wide on the right and when she whipped in a long diagonal ball to the top of the boxm, it was a race between Harvey and Adelaide University’s Johns.
Harvey reached the ball first after a diving save but spilled the ball into the path of Johns who put the ball into the empty net.
It was almost 3-0 immediately after but Harvey was on hand to deny Adelaide University yet again.
Quigley won the ball in the final third and carried the ball inside the penalty area before squaring it for Elli Bills but her shot from 10m was tipped around the post by Harvey.
