Football Federation SA (FFSA) and Football Federation Australia (FFA) referee instructor, Nathan Magill, recently attended a FIFA Futuro III course in Bangkok. The course aims to bring uniformity to the coaching of referee’s world wide and updates participants with current FIFA teachings and expectations.

The week long course covered a number of topics aimed at improving referee coaching and ultimately referee performance.

Some of the topics covered were:

  • Teach the teacher
  • FIFA expectations for law uniformity
  • World Cup Referee Candidates program and how they are preparing them for the World Cup’s
  • Methodology of teaching
  • Situation Analysis- video reviews
  • Laws of the Game Reviews
  • Practical Training – replicating match situations


When asked about the experience the course provided Nathan said;

“The course has been a great opportunity to learn from some of AFC and FIFA’s best instructors. Including former World Cup referee Valentin Ivanov.”

“I have found the course to be greatly beneficial and it provided a lot of teachings which can be passed on down to our local referees and instructors.”

Some of the instructors in attendance from FIFA and AFC were:

– Kari Seitz, former FIFA referee from USA who refereed at four Women’s World Cups (1999, 2003, 2007 and 2011) and four Olympic games (2004, 2008, 2012 and 2016), the only FIFA official to achieve this.

– Valentin Ivanov, former FIFA referee from Russia who attended UEFA Euro 2004 and the 2006 World Cup.

– Subkhiddin Mohd Salleh, Former FIFA referee from Malaysia, who attended the 2010 World Cup as a 4th Official as well as the 2011 AFC Asian Cup.

– Sachiko Yamagishi, FIFA referee from Japan who attended the Women’s World Cup in 2015 and was also named Female Referee of the Year by AFC in 2013

FFSA looks forward to Nathan passing on his knowledge gained at the latest course to our current group of referees, assessors and instrutors.
